Crowned is a unique original work, built by hand in multiple layers.
The piece started as a photograph, but has become a physical mixed-media object on wood. The surface is built with gold paint containing metallic particles, Japanese Awagami Kozo paper, linseed oil, several layers of varnish and details of gold leaf.
The ornate gold frame is part of the work itself. It gives the image the presence of a dark icon, somewhere between photography, painting and devotional object.
The surface is tactile and imperfect, with visible traces of the process, the paper, the oil, the varnish and the layers underneath. The image shifts with the light and cannot be reproduced as a flat print.
